Jack in the Box Manager Admits Stealing $232K to Feed Gambling Addiction

By Alex Korsager 3 min read

A former Jack in the Box manager in Redwood City, California, has admitted taking more than $232,000 from the restaurant to fund his gambling. Juan Jose Antonio Vanegas, 30, pleaded no contest to felony embezzlement on Oct. 20. For casino players, the case is a blunt reminder of what an unchecked gambling habit can cost.

What did the jack box manager admit to?

Vanegas admitted taking at least $232,282 from the Jack in the Box on Woodside Road, and nearly all of it went to his gambling problem. Court records show he skipped 120 bank deposits of daily restaurant revenue between Jan. 1, 2025, and Aug. 1, 2025. That's seven months of skimming cash. The business accountant spotted the gap.

Prosecutors in San Mateo County agreed to drop an enhancement charge. At his Dec. 10 sentencing, Judge Jeffrey Jackson can hand down a maximum of one year in county jail, with no state prison term. A felony embezzlement conviction over $200,000 would normally mean more than two years behind bars in California.

Law enforcement didn't name the casinos or platforms Vanegas used. Redwood City sits within a short drive of several commercial cardrooms, and online sweepstakes casino sites were widely available in California during the theft window, before a state ban on that operator model took effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

Why should casino players care about this story?

This story matters to casino players because it shows how fast gambling debt can push someone into criminal territory, and why licensed operators build checks around exactly that risk. We don't know where Vanegas gambled. What we do know is the pattern: losses, then chasing, then money that isn't yours.

Licensed casinos are required to offer responsible gambling tools such as deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Unlicensed or lightly regulated sites often aren't. If you're betting somewhere that never asks about your spending, that's a warning sign, not a perk. Our how we rate casinos page explains what we check before a brand gets listed.

How do you spot a gambling problem before it costs you?

A gambling problem usually shows up in your bank balance before it shows up in your head. Set a monthly loss limit you can afford to lose completely, and stop when you hit it. Never borrow to bet. Never touch money that's earmarked for rent, bills or someone else's wages.

Free, confidential help is available at BeGambleAware.org, and GAMSTOP lets UK players block themselves from licensed sites. If you're in the US, the National Problem Gambling Helpline runs 24/7 on 1-800-522-4700.

What should smart players do next?

Smart players should treat this case as a prompt to audit their own setup: check your deposit limits, confirm the site's licence, and know your self-exclusion options before you need them. The best online casinos we recommend all publish their licensing details and responsible gambling policies up front. If a site hides that information, walk away.

This isn't the first gambling scandal tied to the Jack in the Box name, either. In 2013, former San Diego Mayor Maureen O'Connor, widow of the brand's founder, admitted siphoning $2 million from her late husband's charitable foundation after losing a $40 million fortune at casinos. She blamed a brain tumour removed in 2011.

The bottom line for players

The jack box manager case is a $232,282 lesson in what happens when gambling stops being entertainment and starts being a debt you can't see a way out of. Smart players set limits before they play, stick to licensed casinos with real responsible gambling tools, and ask for help early. If you can't control your spending, stop and reach out to BeGambleAware.org or GAMSTOP today.
