EPL Jersey Ban Has Limited Impact on Gambling Ads

By Daniel Cheung 3 min read

The epl jersey ban cut front-of-shirt betting logos. yet a University of Bristol study found it reduced gambling advertising in live Premier League broadcasts by only 10.5%. For casino and sportsbook players, that's the real story: a headline restriction moved the ads rather than removing them. so you'll still meet betting messages everywhere you watch.

What the epl jersey ban actually changed?

The epl jersey ban removed betting logos from the fronts of matchday shirts, and that's about all it did. Researchers recorded 15,571 gambling marketing messages across the opening weekend of the 2026-27 season, from 21 to 24 August. Clubs agreed the voluntary restriction back in 2023, and it kicked in this season.

Here's where the branding went. Sleeve and training-gear advertising jumped 362% against previous years. Perimeter boards around the pitch made up 72% of gambling messages during live broadcasts. The ban covers shirt fronts only, so sleeves, training kit and stadium hoardings sit outside it.

That's the pattern every casino player should clock. When regulators squeeze one channel, marketing budgets shift to the next. The same logic applies to casino bonuses and affiliate ads: a rule that targets one format rarely kills the spend behind it.

How much gambling advertising reached viewers?

Live match coverage alone carried 11,205 gambling messages across the seven televised games studied. At least one betting ad was visible for five hours and 16 minutes, close to 20% of broadcast time. Newcastle against Liverpool was the worst: 2,702 messages, more than 12 a minute, with gambling visible for nearly 41% of the broadcast.

The researchers also looked beyond England. Premier League games averaged 2,449 gambling messages per match across the four-year study. against 1,677 in Germany's Bundesliga and under 510 across NBA and NHL coverage in North America.

Dr Raffaello Rossi, who led the work, put it plainly: the front-of-shirt ban removed logos from shirt fronts but not from football. Campaigners took the findings to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Gambling Reform. where co-chair Sir Iain Duncan Smith called the voluntary approach a failure and pushed for tighter government rules.

What should smart bettors and casino players do?

Treat broadcast betting ads as marketing, not advice. The volume tells you how hard bookmakers are competing for your attention, and none of it changes the maths of a bet or a slot. What protects you is the same set of habits we test for in our how we rate casinos checks: a clear licence. honest terms on casino bonuses, and fast, reliable payouts.

Set limits before you watch, not during. A live match with 12 betting messages a minute is designed to prompt a quick in-play bet. so decide your stake and your stop point in advance. Use deposit limits and time-outs through the operator's responsible gambling tools, and if betting stops feeling like a choice, BeGambleAware.org offers free, confidential support.

Compare licensed options properly rather than reacting to the loudest ad. Our best online casinos list only covers brands we've checked ourselves, and our casino guides explain how wagering requirements and RTP really work. If you're in the UK, stick to UK Gambling Commission licensed sites.

The bottom line for players

The epl jersey ban is a lesson in marketing displacement, not a fix. Gambling ads will keep reaching you through sleeves, hoardings and social feeds. so the protection has to come from you: set limits, read the terms, and bet only with licensed operators.
