How online blackjack works
Blackjack is the casino's most beatable table game — a contest of skill against a dealer where your decisions genuinely change the odds. The goal is simple: build a hand that totals closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over (a "bust"). Number cards score their face value, face cards count as 10, and an ace is worth 1 or 11, whichever helps. A two-card 21 — an ace plus a ten-value card — is a blackjack and usually pays 3:2. The flow of a hand
You place a bet and receive two cards face-up; the dealer takes one up and one down. Then you choose how to play:
- Hit — take another card.
- Stand — keep your total.
- Double down — double your bet for exactly one more card.
- Split — if dealt a pair, split it into two separate hands.
- Surrender — where offered, forfeit half your bet to fold a bad hand.
The dealer then reveals and plays a fixed pattern — typically hitting until 17 — and the closest to 21 without busting wins.
Rules that change the math
Not all blackjack is equal. Before you sit down, check the table rules, because small print moves the house edge:
- Blackjack pays 3:2 is essential. Tables paying 6:5 quietly add over 1% to the house edge — avoid them.
- Dealer stands on soft 17 is better for you than "hits soft 17".
- Number of decks matters: fewer decks favour the player.
- Double after split and surrender options nudge the edge in your favour.
A good 3:2 game with player-friendly rules and basic strategy can drop the house edge to around 0.5% — the best odds on the casino floor.
Basic strategy is the whole game
Blackjack has a mathematically optimal play for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card — this is basic strategy, and it is not opinion, it is solved math. Memorising it (or using a printable chart while you play online) is the difference between a ~0.5% house edge and a 2–3% one bled away by guesswork. The headline rules: always stand on hard 17+, always split aces and eights, never split tens, double on 11, and hit hard totals of 8 or less. Learn the chart and you are playing blackjack the way it is meant to be played.
Card counting, online
Counting cards can theoretically flip the edge to the player, but it is effectively dead online: RNG tables reshuffle every hand, so there is no count to track. Live dealer tables use continuous or frequent shuffling and multiple decks for the same reason. Treat online blackjack as a basic-strategy game, not a counting game.
