Ontario Sports Betting Revenue Jumps 27% in September as NFL Kicks Off
Ontario sports betting revenue jumped 27% month over month in September as the NFL season kicked off, iGaming Ontario reports. Total market revenue hit CA$416.3 million. For casino players, the story sits in the split: online casino still takes 88% of all wagers. That said, so the football surge didn't dent the house's core product.
What the September numbers actually show for casino players?
Online casino kept its grip on Ontario's regulated market, pulling CA$8.504 billion in cash wagers for an 88% share. That's down 3% from August, but it dwarfs the CA$1.074 billion sports bettors staked. Casino revenue came in at CA$340.8 million, up 1%, for 82% of all gaming revenue.
Here's the bit that matters if you play slots or table games. Football promotions pulled in a wave of new accounts, and the active player pool hit a record 1.413 million, up 17%. Average revenue per account fell 10% to CA$295. That's classic acquisition maths: operators spent on sign-up offers to win the kickoff crowd, and the average spend per player dropped as a result.
Poker told a quieter story. Peer-to-peer handle reached CA$130 million, up 7%, with revenue of CA$6.4 million.
Why does a record player pool matter for responsible gambling?
A record 1.413 million active accounts is good for the market and a warning flag at the same time. More new players means more people meeting betting for the first time during a promo-heavy month. Football kickoff offers are designed to feel like free money, and they often carry wagering conditions that catch people out.

Ontario's market launched in April 2022 and now runs 49 licensed operators across 84 gaming sites. Fanatics Casino joined in early September, following Hard Rock in July. Licensing is the reason those names are allowed to trade there at all, and it's the first thing we check when we review a brand.
What should smart players do with this?
Treat the football surge as a signal about where the value sits, not an invitation to chase bonuses. Casino revenue grew just 1% while sports betting revenue grew 27%, which tells you operators are competing hardest for sportsbook sign-ups right now. That competition usually means better headline offers on the betting side.
Compare the real terms, not the headline. A CA$295 average spend per account is a useful benchmark: if your monthly outlay is running well above that. it's worth a hard look at your budget. Check casino bonuses for the conditions behind each offer, and start with best online casinos that hold a proper licence before you hand over card details.
One more thing to watch. Canada's Supreme Court is due to rule on whether provincial operators can pool poker liquidity with international player bases. If that goes through, Ontario's small poker pool could get deeper, which changes the value equation for anyone who plays there.
The bottom line for players
Ontario's September figures show a healthy, growing market where casino still pays the bills and football brings in fresh faces. Smart players should use the promo season to compare terms, set a deposit limit before signing up. and never let a welcome offer decide how much they spend. If you're only there for the bonus, skip it. If you're playing for fun with money you can afford to lose, the market is in decent shape.
