Elderly Gambling Ring Accused of Drugging Golfer to Win $52K in Bets
An elderly gambling ring in South Korea is accused of drugging a golf opponent's coffee to win 75 million won (about $52,000) in bets, Seoul police said. The case matters to casino and sportsbook players because it shows how far fixers will go to rig a wager. and why regulated betting beats back-room bets every time.
What happened in the elderly gambling ring case?
Police in Seoul say three men in their 60s and 70s spent months grooming a fellow golfer before spiking his drink at a high-stakes round. The trio allegedly lost small bets on purpose from May onwards to build trust. then set up a July 30 match at a course in Gyeonggi Province, outside the capital. When the victim left for the restroom before teeing off. one man kept watch at the door while another poured a pre-prepared sleeping drug into his disposable coffee cup.
The golfer drank it, then played 36 holes with what investigators describe as impaired motor skills and judgement. MBC television reported the drug can cause short-term memory loss. After the round, the three told him he'd lost the wager and demanded payment at a restaurant. He transferred 75 million won to an account they controlled. He later grew suspicious and called police.
How did police catch them?
Course security footage allegedly caught the men tampering with the cup, watching the doorway and handing the drink over. Forensic tests on the victim's urine and hair found psychotropic substances, and prescription records plus medical experts confirmed the drugs had never been prescribed to him. Namdaemun Police Station referred the trio to prosecutors on October 30 on suspicion of fraud and breaking South Korea's Narcotics Control Act. One man in his 60s is in custody; the other two were referred without detention.
Why should casino and sportsbook players care?
This is a private, unregulated wager between acquaintances, and that's exactly where the danger sits. There's no licensed operator, no audit trail, no dispute process. If you bet through a properly licensed casino or sportsbook, your stake and payout sit inside a system with rules, records and a complaints route. Off-book bets between friends carry none of that. We've said it before in our casino guides: the moment money changes hands outside a licensed platform, you're relying on the other person's honesty. Here, police allege that honesty was never there.
The betting angle cuts both ways. A wager large enough to be worth drugging someone over is a wager nobody should be making informally. If you want to bet on sport, do it with a licensed bookmaker where stakes, odds and payouts are all on the record.
What should smart players take from this?
Treat any high-stakes private bet with real caution. If someone you've only recently met is suddenly keen to raise the stakes, ask why. The grooming pattern here, months of friendly losses to build rapport, is the same playbook fraudsters use in plenty of settings. Stick to best online casinos and licensed sportsbooks that hold a valid permit, publish their terms and give you responsible gambling tools you can actually use. Set deposit limits before you play, and never wager money you can't afford to lose. If gambling stops feeling like fun, BeGambleAware.org offers free, confidential support.
The bottom line for players
This story is a reminder that unregulated bets are a gamble on people, not odds. Smart players keep their money inside licensed, accountable platforms and walk away from private wagers that suddenly get serious. If you're betting, bet where there's a paper trail and a regulator watching.
