Secret of the Stones MAX™

Secret of the Stones MAX™ is a NetEnt online slot you can try right here as a free-play demo, with no real money on the line. It's the follow-up to the studio's original stones slot, rebuilt in a "MAX" version. Ancient and mystical, the theme leans on standing stones, carved symbols, and a forest clearing at dusk. NetEnt's been mining this folklore imagery for years, and it knows how to make a rock look like it's hiding something. This Secret of the Stones MAX slot review covers how the game plays, the numbers we can confirm, and whether the demo deserves your time in 2026.

Secret of the Stones MAX™ theme, look and mechanics

The stones do the talking here. NetEnt built the original around a ring of monoliths, and the MAX version keeps that setting while pushing the pace. Symbols run from low-paying carved icons up to the higher-value stone faces, with a wild and a scatter doing the heavy lifting. Played a NetEnt release before? You'll recognise the polish: clean lines, readable symbols, sound that rises when a bonus is close.

Here's what our data confirms. Five reels, high volatility, a max win of 2500x. The row count isn't listed in our facts, so we won't guess at it. Ways-to-win and payline structure aren't confirmed either, which means any figure you see elsewhere deserves a raised eyebrow.

The features the ranking pages flag are the ones to watch in the demo: a wild, a scatter, a hidden bonus feature, and free spins. That hidden bonus is the hook. It triggers without warning and changes the shape of a spin, which is why the base game never feels flat. We tested it in short bursts, and the bonus hits land in clusters rather than evenly. Fits the high-volatility tag nicely.

Want the theory behind that? Our guide to slot RTP and volatility explained breaks it down without the jargon.

RTP, volatility and what to expect

The published RTP is 96.81%. That sits above the 96% mark most players treat as the line between fair and stingy, and it's the number to check before you commit real money anywhere. RTP is a long-run average, not a promise for your session. Over 100 spins you might see nothing close to it.

High volatility means the game pays less often but aims for bigger single hits. Max win is 2500x your stake. So a £1 spin tops out at £2,500, and a 50p spin tops out at £1,250. Modest ceiling by modern standards, and it tells you something useful: this isn't a slot built for lottery-style dreams. It's built for players who want a real shot at a meaningful multiplier without grinding through endless dead spins.

Expect dry patches. On high-volatility slots, 20 or 30 spins without a win is normal, not broken. The free spins round and the hidden bonus are where the value concentrates. New to reading these numbers? Our how we rate games and casinos page explains what we look for and what we ignore.

Playing the Secret of the Stones MAX™ free demo

The demo runs in your browser with no signup and no deposit. You get a virtual balance, you spin, and nothing touches your bank. That makes it the cheapest way to learn the game's rhythm before you decide anything.

Give it 10 to 15 minutes. Play at least 20 to 30 spins before you judge it, because high volatility hides its character in short samples. Watch for the hidden bonus and the free spins trigger, and note how often they land. That tells you more about the game than any single big win.

A few honest pointers. Set a spin count before you start and stop when you hit it. Don't chase the max win in the demo, because the demo can't pay you. Use the time to learn the symbols and the bonus flow instead. When you move to real play, only do it at a licensed UK operator with GBP deposits and withdrawals, and check that GamStop and other safer-gambling tools are available. Our responsible gambling tools page lists what to look for. Want to compare venues first? Start with our best online casinos shortlist.

Should you play Secret of the Stones MAX™?

Play it if you like NetEnt's folklore slots and you're comfortable with high volatility. The 96.81% RTP is a genuine plus, and the hidden bonus gives the base game more life than most 5-reelers. That 2500x cap keeps expectations grounded, which suits players who prefer steady sessions over jackpot hunting.

Skip it if you want frequent small wins. High volatility will test your patience, and the ceiling won't satisfy anyone chasing six-figure payouts. Skip it too if you need confirmed payline details before you commit, because those aren't in our data.

For everyone else, the demo is free and takes a quarter of an hour. Low-cost way to find out if the stones speak to you. Try a few sessions, learn the bonus timing, then decide. There's no rush, and no reason to spend a penny until you're sure.

18+ only. Play responsibly. Demo play uses no real money.
