Sanctuary

Sanctuary slot review: Big Time Gaming's 2023 Egypt release

Sanctuary is a 2023 Big Time Gaming slot with an Ancient Egypt theme. You get 6 reels, 96 ways to win, high volatility and a published RTP of 96.38%. That's a strong number for a modern release, and it's the first thing we check in any Sanctuary slot review. We tested the free demo to see whether the mechanics carry it.

Temples, tombs, gold. Familiar ground. Big Time Gaming rarely plays it safe, though, so the question is whether the engine underneath earns your time.

Sanctuary theme, look and mechanics

Ancient Egypt is one of the most crowded themes in slots, and Big Time Gaming knows it. The appeal here isn't the setting. It's the engine underneath. This studio made its name by building new ways to win, and that habit shows up in how Sanctuary plays.

You're looking at a 6-reel game with 96 ways to win. That's a lower ways count than the Megaways monsters the studio is famous for, and it changes the feel. Wins land less often on paper, but each one can carry more weight. The base game runs on a 6x2 grid, and the reels spin fast. Symbols are the usual Egypt suspects, plus the special icons that drive the features.

Two mechanics stand out. First, full reel wilds. A wild can cover an entire reel, which opens up bigger line hits than a single wild ever could. Second, sticky wilds. These lock in place and stay for the duration of a feature, so a good spin can snowball.

The free spins round is the main event. There's also a gamble option that lets you risk your trigger for a better setup, which suits players who like a decision instead of a passive bonus. We'd rather see that choice than a fixed round.

Sound and visuals do the job. The soundtrack sets a mood without shouting over the reels. It won't win awards for originality, but it never gets in the way. If you want to see how we weigh design against mechanics, our guide on how we rate casinos breaks it down.

What RTP and volatility should you expect?

The published RTP is 96.38%, and volatility is high. That RTP sits above the 96% mark most players treat as the benchmark, so it's a genuine plus. Remember that RTP is a long-run average, not a promise for your session. Over 20 spins it means nothing. Over millions, it's the house edge in plain numbers.

High volatility means long dry spells and fewer but larger payouts. You'll spin through dead patches, then hit something that makes up for it. This is not a game for a small, cautious bankroll.

We couldn't confirm a max win figure from our sources, so we won't quote one. Treat any specific multiplier you see elsewhere with caution unless the source is solid. What we can say is that the full reel wilds and sticky wilds are the paths to the biggest hits. Those features are where the payout potential lives.

If the difference between RTP and volatility is fuzzy for you, our explainer on slot RTP and volatility explained is worth ten minutes. It'll change how you pick games. For a high-volatility title like this, understanding the trade-off matters more than the theme.

How do you play the Sanctuary free demo?

The demo is the smartest way to try this. No signup, no deposit, no real money. You load it and spin. That's it. We ran a few hundred spins before forming an opinion, and we'd suggest you do the same.

Here's our honest advice. Give it 10 to 15 minutes minimum. Play at least 20 to 30 spins before you judge it. High-volatility slots punish quick verdicts. A short session can look flat and tell you nothing about how the features actually behave.

Watch for the full reel wilds landing. Note how often the free spins trigger. See whether the gamble option feels worth the risk to you. Those are the moments that define the game.

The demo uses virtual credits, so the pressure is off. Use that. Test the bonus rounds, push the gamble, and get a feel for the swing. When you move to real play, the same patterns apply, but now the money is yours.

If you decide to play for real, stick to licensed sites. In the UK that means an 18+ operator with a UKGC licence, GBP deposits and withdrawals, and tools like GamStop. Should you play Sanctuary?

Yes, if you like high volatility and you're patient. The 96.38% RTP is a real draw. The full reel wilds and sticky wilds give the bonus rounds genuine bite. Big Time Gaming fans will recognise the craft here, even if the Egypt theme feels safe.

Skip it if you want frequent small wins. High volatility means you'll wait. Skip it too if you're chasing a quick, low-risk session. This isn't that game.

For everyone else, try the demo first. Ten minutes tells you more than any review. We came away respecting the mechanics more than the theme. The engine is what matters.

Sanctuary earns a place in your rotation if you enjoy the studio's style and you've got the bankroll to ride the swings. It's not their boldest release, but it's a solid one. Test it free, then decide.
