Mystery Reels Megaways™

Mystery Reels Megaways™ is a Red Tiger online slot built on Big Time Gaming's Megaways engine. It's the mystery-symbol branch of Red Tiger's long-running Mystery Reels line. We reviewed the free-play demo, so nothing here involves real money. The hook is simple: symbols flip to reveal something else, and the grid can throw up a different number of ways to win on every spin. That's the whole pitch. A good one, too, if you like slots that keep you guessing rather than ones you can read at a glance. This Mystery Reels Megaways™ slot review covers how it plays, the numbers we can confirm, and whether it's worth your time in demo mode.

Mystery Reels Megaways™ theme, look and mechanics

Red Tiger has a house style, and you'll spot it here fast. Clean symbols, a dark backdrop, and a mystery symbol that does the heavy lifting. The studio built its name on slots that look tidy and run smoothly. This one fits that mould. Nothing is cluttered. You always know what you're looking at.

Megaways is the engine underneath. Instead of fixed paylines, the reels change height on each spin, so the number of ways to win shifts constantly. This game runs 6 reels with up to 117,649 ways to win, which is the standard Megaways ceiling. Every spin is a fresh layout. That's what makes the format feel different from a classic 20-line slot, where the maths sits still.

The mystery symbol is the signature mechanic. When it lands, it flips to reveal a paying symbol, and it can appear across the reels rather than in one spot. Hence the name. The base game carries most of the weight here, so don't expect the screen to explode every few spins. It won't. Patience is part of the deal.

We tested the demo across a few hundred spins to get a feel for the hit rate. Dead spins are common. Then a mystery reveal lands and the board changes. That rhythm is the appeal.

RTP, volatility and what to expect

The published RTP is 98.06%. That's high. Most online slots sit somewhere in the 94% to 96.5% range, so this figure stands out. RTP is the theoretical return over millions of spins, not a promise for your session. Still, a higher number is better for you, all else being equal. If you want the maths behind that, our guide to slot RTP and volatility explained breaks it down properly.

Volatility is high. Long dry spells, punctuated by bigger and less frequent wins. Your balance can drop steadily before anything lands. The max win is 5000x your stake, which is a solid ceiling for a Megaways title but not the wildest out there. At a £1 stake, that's £5,000. At 20p, it's £1,000. Do the maths on your own stake before you spin.

One thing worth flagging: RTP can vary between operators. Red Tiger slots sometimes ship in more than one version, and not every casino runs the 98.06% build. If you ever play for real, check the game's help screen or the operator's own listing before you commit. The demo we tested uses the published figure.

Playing the Mystery Reels Megaways™ free demo

The demo needs no signup and no deposit. You load it, you get a virtual balance, and you spin. Same reels, same RTP, same mystery reveals as the real-money version. The only difference is that the money isn't real, so nothing you win or lose matters.

Give it 10 to 15 minutes. That's roughly 20 to 30 spins at a normal pace, which is enough to see a mystery reveal or two and get a read on how often the base game pays. Judging a high-volatility slot on five spins tells you nothing. You'll just hit dead spins and walk away with the wrong impression.

Play with the stake buttons. Drop to the minimum and watch how the balance moves. Then try a bigger stake and see how fast the swings come. That's the real lesson of a demo: it shows you the variance without costing you anything.

If you want to compare it against other titles before committing, our free casino games section has plenty more demos to test.

Should you play Mystery Reels Megaways™?

Play it if you like Megaways and you want a high RTP with a mystery-symbol twist. The 98.06% figure is the standout here, and it's rare to see one that high. Red Tiger fans will feel at home straight away.

Skip it if you want frequent small wins. High volatility means you'll sit through a lot of nothing before the good stuff shows up. That frustrates plenty of players, and there's no shame in admitting it. If you prefer steadier slots, this isn't the one.

The mystery mechanic is fun but it isn't revolutionary. It's a solid, well-built slot rather than a landmark one. For a free look, though, there's no reason not to try it. It costs you nothing but time.
