Hotline 2™

Hotline 2™ is a NetEnt slot from 2020, and it's the follow-up to one of the studio's better-loved cops-and-robbers games. Think Miami at night. Neon, fast cars, a synth soundtrack, and a detective who looks like he walked off an 80s movie poster. This Hotline 2™ slot review covers how the demo plays, what the numbers actually mean, and whether it's worth your time before you ever think about real money.

We tested the free-play version, so nothing here involves a deposit. What you get is 5 reels, 243 ways to win, medium volatility, and a published RTP of 96.05%. NetEnt built its name on exactly this kind of polished, mid-stakes game, and Hotline 2 sits comfortably in that mould. If you've played the original, the vibe will feel familiar. If you haven't, you're in for a slick little heist.

Hotline 2™ theme, look and mechanics

The theme is pure 1980s cop drama. Palm trees, pink-and-blue skies, and a getaway car parked on the reels. NetEnt has always been good at this retro-gloss look, and the artwork here holds up well in 2026. The music does a lot of the heavy lifting too. It's the kind of loop that gets stuck in your head after ten minutes, which is either a feature or a bug depending on your patience.

Mechanically, this is a 5-reel, 243-ways game. That means no fixed paylines to memorise. Symbols just need to land on adjacent reels from the left, and you're paid. It's a friendlier setup than classic line slots, especially for anyone new to spinning.

The headline feature is the Hotline mechanic carried over from the first game. Certain symbols get highlighted on the middle reel, and when matching symbols land on the reels either side, they expand to cover the whole reel. It's a simple idea that creates some genuinely tense spins. What sets it apart from a lot of 243-ways slots is that the base game rarely feels dead. There's usually something ticking over.

We didn't find a stated number of rows in our sources, so we won't guess at one. What we can say is the layout feels standard for a NetEnt five-reeler, and the pacing is brisk. If you want to compare it against other releases, our free casino games section has plenty of demos to run side by side.

RTP, volatility and what to expect

The published RTP is 96.05%, which sits above the 96% mark that most players treat as the rough industry baseline. That's a good number. It means, over a very long run of spins, the game is designed to return about £96.05 for every £100 staked. Short sessions won't reflect that at all, and you should never treat RTP as a promise for your next 50 spins.

Volatility is rated medium. In plain terms, you'll see a mix of smaller wins and the occasional bigger hit, without the brutal dry spells that high-volatility slots are known for. It's a comfortable middle ground. If you want the full breakdown of how these ratings work, our guide to slot RTP and volatility explained is worth ten minutes.

The confirmed max win is 5,184 times your stake. That's a solid ceiling for a medium-volatility game, and it's the kind of figure that gives the bonus rounds real purpose. At a £1 stake, that's a theoretical top payout of £5,184. We're not going to dress that up as life-changing money, because it isn't. But it's a fair top end for the risk profile.

One thing the ranking pages often skip: RTP can vary between casinos and game versions. Always check the paytable in the demo before you commit to anything.

Playing the Hotline 2™ free demo

The demo needs no signup and no card details. You load it, you get a virtual balance, and you spin. That's it. No real money changes hands, and nothing you win or lose in demo mode carries over to a real account.

Here's how we'd use it. Give it 10 to 15 minutes, and run at least 20 to 30 spins before you form an opinion. Medium-volatility games can look quiet over a short burst and then throw a decent run at you. Judging it on five spins tells you nothing.

Use the demo to learn the Hotline mechanic. Watch how the highlighted middle-reel symbols behave when matching icons land beside them. That's the whole game in one glance, and it's much easier to spot in free play than when you're watching a real balance.

We also suggest testing a few stake sizes, even in demo, to see how the win values scale. If you later move to best online casinos for real play, you'll already know what a normal spin looks like. And if gambling ever stops being fun, our responsible gambling tools page covers the options that matter.

Should you play Hotline 2™?

Play it if you like retro themes, medium volatility, and a base game that keeps moving. The 243 ways format suits casual players, and the 96.05% RTP is genuinely competitive. NetEnt knows how to build a slot that feels good to spin, and this one does.

Skip it if you chase huge volatility swings or want a sprawling, feature-packed modern release. This is a tighter, more old-school experience, and the max win of 5,184x reflects that. It won't suit everyone.

For a UK reader, a few practical notes. Real-money play requires you to be 18 or over, and licensed UK sites use UKGC regulation, GBP deposits and withdrawals, and tools like GamStop. Those protections apply to real play, not the demo. The demo itself carries no licence requirement because no money is involved.

Our verdict: a well-made, honest slot that's easy to recommend for a free session. Try it, learn the mechanic, then decide.

18+ only. Play responsibly. Demo play uses no real money.
